Lemons can do so much more than sit on the rim of your water glass. These amazing little fruits have several tricks up their sleeves, and you could be taking advantage of these all-natural, affordable beauty hacks.
Whiten Your Teeth
Tooth whitening treatments like strips and gels can be pretty harsh, and if you have issues with tooth pain or sensitivity, they might be right out of the question. Luckily, there’s another option available, and it’s much gentler.
Make a paste by mixing lemon juice with a little baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Use a toothbrush to apply this paste over your teeth, and rinse clean after one minute. This can be repeated once a week for best results.
Brighten Up Dull Fingernails
Smokers often battle stained fingernails, but even people who’ve never touched a cigarette might find their nails yellowing. Dark nail polish can sometimes be to blame, but it can also be down to what your nails are exposed to during the day. Nail polish remover won’t do the trick, so it’s time to try something else.
Soaking your nails in lemon juice for two minutes can bring back their natural brightness. This may go without saying, but be sure you don’t have any hangnails or paper cuts before plunging your fingers into lemon juice. Ouch!
Spot Treat Your Breakouts
Make a paste out of a few drops of lemon juice and ground cinnamon, and apply a small amount directly onto breakouts. This can help reduce inflammation and redness. Remember to wash the paste off after about 15 minutes.
Applying a slice of lemon onto areas where you have trouble with blackheads, for example nose, chin or forehead, and then gently massaging can gradually help reduce the number of blackheads.
Make a Natural Astringent
If you have oily skin there are many products on the market that claim to control it, but almost all of them contain harsh chemicals that can actually irritate your skin and make things worse.
Lemon juice is a great natural astringent, and citric acid has antibacterial properties that can kill acne-causing germs. Because lemon juice can make your eyes sting, it’s best to apply the juice with a cotton ball, and rinse thoroughly with water afterwards.
Emergency Breath Freshener
Maybe not something you would think of right away, but because lemon juice can kill bacteria it makes a great breath freshener in a pinch. Yes, you’ll have to bite down on a tart lemon wedge to achieve this result, but if you have no toothbrush or gum, and need a quick refresher, lemons can save the day. No cheating by adding sugar, as that’s what can lead to bad breath in the first place!
Bring Back Your Hair Shine
A lemon juice scalp massage can help to bring back some natural shine to your hair. Massage generously, wait 15 minutes, and rinse. Be careful not to leave it on too long as lemon juice can also lighten your hair. (Unless of course you want some free highlights!)
