Trying something completely new is a surefire way to beat the boredom, and now it’s easy to test it out in the confines of your own living room!

Get Your Steps in at the Mall

Yes, you might think that the concept of “mall walking” is something that should be reserved for senior citizens only, but think again. Malls tend to stay open until around 9 or 10 p.m. and they offer a safe, well-lit, and temperature-controlled area in which to take a brisk stroll.

Plus, if you are the type who tends to get bored on a walk, simply take a spin around a department store, or make a detour into an interesting looking shop. Take your pedometer with you, and explore every inch of your local mall until you hit your step goal.

If you happen to live in a home with a staircase, then you already have a ready-made and professionally installed piece of fitness equipment. Lace up a good pair of nonslip shoes, and get walking.

Sure, something as simple as running up and down the stairs will get you a very good cardiovascular workout, but do yourself a favor and Google some creative stair workouts. You’ll be amazed at what you can do on those same stairs you’ve been going up and down for years.

As video game consoles continue to evolve before our very eyes, they have brought a whole new aspect of fitness into our lives – the video game workout.

Nearly every console you can think of has an entire suite of workout or dance games which require you to follow along with coordinated movements in front of your TV. Some great titles to explore are Wii Fit, Dance Party, and Dance Dance Revolution (note that some of these require peripheral equipment), but there are many more to choose from.

And speaking of the TV, something about the fall and winter months drives us toward that glowing rectangle more often than usual. So, since you know you’re going to be there bingeing on your favorite shows anyway, why not set yourself up for success?

Placing an elliptical trainer, stationary bike, or rowing machine in front of the TV is a great strategy for keeping yourself moving. You get to catch up on your shows, and you get to put in a pretty good workout at the same time!
