4 Ways Turmeric Can Change Your Life

If you are already a fan of Indian food, you can now enjoy your favorite cuisine with even less guilt. Recent discoveries have revealed that turmeric, the spice that gives curry its yellow color, may just be one of the most amazing nutritional supplements in the world. Scientists are now studying this vibrant spice in earnest, because it appears that there are some tremendous health benefits to be gained from regular consumption.

So, what can turmeric do for you? Check out this list…

Turmeric Eases Joint and Arthritis Pain

The active compound in turmeric is called curcumin, and scientists are already aware of the fact that curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

People suffering from arthritis often have to deal with painful joint inflammation, so anything that acts as an anti-inflammatory is bound to help. However, taking anti-inflammatory medications comes with a certain set of risks and complications. For instance, pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen are metabolized by the kidneys, and taking too many of these can eventually result in renal failure.

Doctors have been looking for safer alternatives, and it looks like turmeric and curcumin might be the key. Patients who took curcumin supplements reported less pain and inflammation due to arthritis and even rheumatoid arthritis.

Turmeric May Protect the Brain

If you read medical news reports, you’ll have probably come across the term “blood-brain barrier” from time to time. This is an important factor in the development of medications, because in order for a substance to be effective in treating brain disorders, it needs to be able to travel from your bloodstream into your brain.

It transpires that turmeric is one of the substances which can do this. More studies need to be done, but it appears that turmeric may be also able to clear amyloid plaques – one of the main culprits behind Alzheimer’s disease. Other studies show that people with depression who supplement with turmeric experience a similar improvement in their symptoms to those taking antidepressants.

These benefits are still under investigation at the moment, but there are some exciting studies underway which may prove that turmeric is extremely effective in protecting the brain.

Turmeric Can Slow the Aging Process

Much of the damage that happens due to aging is thought to be caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unattached and highly reactive molecules which make their way through your body and bond with important substances such as fatty acids, or even your DNA. When they do this, they change the substances they bond with, and cause oxidative damage.

The best way to combat free radicals is by taking in antioxidants, and turmeric happens to be an extremely effective source. People who have plenty of antioxidants in their diet tend to suffer fewer age-related health complaints.

Turmeric Lowers Your Risk of Heart Disease

Some recent studies show that people supplementing with turmeric and curcumin had lower levels of LDL cholesterol – also known as “bad cholesterol.”

As you know, high cholesterol is often associated with stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular ailments. Having lower overall cholesterol, but especially lower LDL, will reduce your risk of heart disease.

As always, a good relationship with your doctor is key to your general health. Talk to them about how turmeric or curcumin could help address some of your personal health concerns.
