7 Must Haves for a Healthy Kitchen

Living a healthy lifestyle involves a bit of planning, along with the right tools and ingredients. If you’re looking to make your kitchen a hub for health, here are seven items you should not go without.

One of the first things you should purchase for your kitchen when you’re trying to make a healthy change is a juicer. It doesn’t have to be an expensive one, but make sure that it’s able to pulverize both the meat and the skin of most fruits and vegetables. This is important because with many foods, the fiber and the nutrients are often in the skin. You’ll want to keep as much of the fruit in the drink as possible.

Another great kitchen item to add to your arsenal is a wok. Woks are ideal for cooking vegetables and making Asian style meals. This is a much healthier alternative than eating Chinese takeout, as many of those dishes are fried, and contain high amounts of fat and salt. Instead, you could chop up your own vegetables and meat, use fresh herbs and spices, and create a tasty dish that’s also good for you.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

You can’t totally eliminate fats from your diet – that’s why it’s important to have a source of healthy fat in your kitchen. This is where extra virgin olive oil comes in. It’s actually one of the healthiest sources of fat available, and it’s very high in antioxidants. You should be able to find an affordable bottle at your local grocers, but make sure it’s extra virgin olive oil, as other types are processed differently, using methods that strip away the nutrients.

Honey is a natural sweetener and you should definitely have at least one jar in your pantry at all times. Use it to sweeten things like coffee or tea, or in some recipes that call for sugar. With  honey, you don’t have to worry about the dangers that come with high fructose corn syrup or processed sugar. But keep in mind as with anything, you should use honey in moderation. If possible, try to purchase organic honey. It costs a bit more, but you want it to be 100% and raw to reap the health benefits.

Sea Salt

Sea salt is much healthier than table salt for many reasons. One reason is that it promotes weight loss by enabling your body to digest food faster. It  also promotes a strong immune system. When taken with water, sea salt helps decrease cholesterol levels, and prevent strokes and heart attacks. You only need a small amount while cooking, and you can find it in most supermarkets.

Fresh Herbs

There is no substitute for fresh herbs, and if you want a healthy kitchen this is an absolute must have. Start with growing things like chives and parsley, and then add other herbs as you see fit. There are kits available to get you started if you don’t have a green thumb, or you can begin growing them right in your kitchen window.

Dark Chocolate

For those times when you crave something super sweet, always keep dark chocolate in the kitchen. It’s much healthier than milk chocolate, and has some pretty impressive health benefits too. Dark chocolate is very high in antioxidants and has been known to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

These seven items are a must have for a healthy kitchen. Now, there are plenty of other things that you could add to this list, but these tools and foods will definitely get you started on the right track. Most of them can be purchased locally, and won’t set you back too much in terms of cost.
